this question makes no sense if the pressure is reduced to 0 atm, then the entire thing would be 0...and so would the ratio?

Pay attention to what the question asks. Its asking You what the Ratio is for total pressure. But total pressure is not provided in each case - instead you are given GAUGE pressure.

If you do the algebra, the equation turns out to be Vnew/ Vold = Pold/Pnew.

In my problem The change occured from 1.1 atm to 0 Atm. Since this is gauge pressure, we know that we need to add 1 atm to both numbers (since that is not included in the total pressure).... So the answer would be (1.1+1) / (0+1) = 2.1
